NLP Meta Model : Newcastle NLP Practice Group : Newcastle Hypnotherapy Practice Group

OK so its’ SnOw and lots of it. Its freezing and that orange mime ( spiral dynamics ) president of the united states has just confirmed his isolationist, supremacists and circling, U Turn ideas on gun control in America. How much of this is fake news? How much are you inferring and what are your judgements? NLP Meta Model is a tool to touch your reality as real, made up or somewhere in between.

This Trance Cafe, Newcastle NLP Practice Group will be focusing and clarifying how we as people respond and react emotionally and ‘critically’ to our own biases, inferences and judgements. Our biases, inferences and judgements are how we make our Map of the World. Which may be wildly inaccurate at worst or at best help us create and shape a more connected and relational way of being to all of our human race.

The March Newcastle NLP Practice Group will be exploring the kind of personal Maps that are supporting and maintaining problems in our life. By rigorously exploring the differences in what happened, what is being inferred and rules this seems to maintain we are exploring how to change perceptions.

Since December last year I have been re-reading many of the books that were the beginning of my NLP journey, which began around 2002. One of the gems is Language In Thought And Action by Sam Hayakawa originally published in 1939. This in some sense accurately describes ( based in Korzybski General Semantics ) the ideas that support the NLP Meta Model.

Hayakawa’s chapter on Report, Inference and Judgement is close to the NLP version I was introduced to as Description, Interpretation and Evaluation. You could also use the words, very carefully as fact, personal-societal meaning and the law.

The way I understand the NLP Meta Model is that the model provides tools to re-connect with an actual description of events and makes clear the interpretations and evaluations, based on personal experiences, beliefs and interpretations that have in some sense solidified and experience into a personal story.

I have been describing the NLP Meta Model as a double edged sword with a sharp handle for well over a decade, closer to two decades but who is counting? As James Pennybaker has demonstrated, the stories we constantly describe and tell have the power to totally transform our life and the lifes we connect with.

Moving on from the NLP Meta Model into the worlds of reframing as in the NLP world as Sleight of Mouth ( Dilts ) and one of my mentors Christina Hall ( patterns of reformulation ) we can begin to respectfully challenge our beliefs and explore a deeper and more profound meaning in our life.

If you re-read that first paragraph, you will see, judgements, interpretations and what could be described as verifiable facts. This may be how you are categorising you own map of your territory. The possibilities are vast, what if you can genuinely update your maps to reflect ore of what you would love to be sharing with this world?

Working with Loss & Grief : Newcastle Hypnotherapy & NLP Practice Group

As potentially depressing as it may be data from the ONS reveals that January and March are the most popular months to die in the UK. We all know that the final reward of life is the natural transitioning into the unknown. Grieving is our natural process or in some sense our ritual in accepting loss and moving forward.

This February the Newcastle NLP & Hypnotherapy Practice Group is exploring some ideas that can help and assist us in both accepting loss, honoring our feelings, emotions and thoughts and after an appropriate time to move forward with gratitude.

The exploration is about loss in general. This can be the loss of a loved human, pet, idea or possession to extend the concept.

One of the concepts for exploration is including the work of Lisa Feldman Barrett on how emotions are made. This is really new information ( 2017 ) and offers the perspective the our emotions are constructed as predictors of our immediate environment and past experience.

Also on the menu is some utilization of Jungs ideas of rational and irrational functions and perhaps a portion of western philosophy. Culminating in a desert of a co-created process to enjoy together.

Hypnosis – Language & IdeoDynamics : NLP Newcastle Practice Group

As you start to read this post what else are you consciously aware of? I wonder if you noticed you eyes move left to right in the little saccades that they do? Perhaps you are or you aren’t thinking about that now? If you weren’t do you know what were you thinking of as you continue to read? How is your attention shifting?

OK, this months Trance Cafe. March 1st, is an exploration and understanding of some of the aspects of hypnotic language. The ideas is to build up, through practice an understanding of how to use hypnotic language to focus attention and then utilise these aspects to assist people ( your clients ) into altered states of awareness.

Newcastle NLP Practice Group

Being in an altered state of awareness can open up and access unconscious resources, feel good and develop your own technique.

Specifically we will be exploring the esoterically named ( by Erickson and Rossi ) Ideo-Dynamic suggestions that along with some pretty cool question styles can guide people to awareness of movement, sensations, thoughts and emotions.

We will also be building up a simple set of steps that when combined with conscious – unconscious splitting, as an induction, can provide an easy to use way to assist your client ( and give you direct feedback ) into trance.

In principle how to create a dynamic space where insights, resources and new perspectives can grow and evolve.

Hypnosis for Working with Habits and Parts : Newcastle NLP Practice Group

Hypnotherapy Practice Group, Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle No Comments »

Throughout life we have been learning and massing a huge amount of habits. A habit is something we can do in a certain situation with practically no conscious thought. We learn habits through repetition over time.

In change work the concept of ‘parts’ is often used to describe a specific aspect of our personality. These aspects can be emotional, behavioral or thoughts which can be considered as aspects of who we are, aspects of our personality.

Newcastle Hypnotherapy Practice Group

This cafe we will be exploring a variety of ways of working with parts to enhance or change behaviors.

It is a profoundly erroneous truism, repeated by all copy-books and by eminent people when they are making speeches, that we should cultivate the habit of thinking of what we are doing. The precise opposite is the case. Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking about them. Operations of thought are like cavalry charges in a battle — they are strictly limited in number, they require fresh horses, and must only be made at decisive moments.” – Alfred North Whithead

I don’t think we actually fully unlearn any of the habits we amass over our life time. What seems to happen is an old habit is overlaid by a new and more functionally appropriate one. By exploring the sequence of steps of a habit we will intend to firstly make this conscious, to make the habit ‘hot’ and move forward to explore several ways in which we can utilise ( or try to ) the end payoff.

Some ways of working can include:

  • Voice Dialogue
  • Ideo-Motoric Movement
  • Gestalt Tactics
  • Time Distortion

Nurturing Kindfulness : Newcastle NLP Practice Group : April 6th

NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

Being kind to ourself and to others may be one of the most useful human experiences that helps us both recognise our shared human nature ( Kind ) and help us connect our actions to supporting and being there for our fellows with our natural propensity to do good ( Kind ).

This practice group will explore what kindfullness ( the state of being kind ) means individually and why its a good thing to have access to the right kind of kindfullness much more of the time.

So the idea for the evening is to have an exploration into how we do represent the timeless and eternal in our own inner world with the purpose of linking this for ourselves to our kindfulness state. Now we are going to require some personal experiences of being kind and receiving kindness from others to map those particular submodalities.

Having some representations of kindness, an anchor to our representation of  timelessness we will explore how our attention is either drawn or captured ( there seems to me three modes of this ) as a representation and ecologically engage all three structures as a kind of yin and yang multiplicity.

Time permitting we may also explore how the five poisons can prevent kindfull actions and look to solutions as appropriate.

The First Step In Avoiding A Trap … NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Group : 3rd February 2016

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

Its the first Trance Cafe of 2016 and so wishing you a belated happy New Year with lots of wonderful experiences to come.

For the February practice evening I want to explore some behavioural patterns that we have learned and seem to likely play out unconsciously. Sometimes, most times, our unconscious behaviour serves us really well, occasionally it doesn’t.

If our thoughts and behaviours are largely unconscious, how can we review and update what we perceive as problematic ‘responses’ in a certain context? This will include some explorations of ‘patterns’, how we can incorporate new learnings and ‘utilising’ these patterns to incorporate useful differences in new ways.

Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Group

All this will naturally include practising aspects of hypnosis, inductions and change process with a sprinkling of neurology and psychology. Perhaps!

Thresholding Your Futures : Newcastle Hypnotherapy and NLP Practice Group : 4th February

Hypnotherapy Practice Group, Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle No Comments »

In this process I am borrowing on the Buddhist and Taoist idea of a middle road and this means balance. Balance in our thoughts and feelings and with our actions. This process can be very useful when planning a honest and realistic outcome or when facing challenging or difficult times such as when in the process of stopping some problem behaviour. Equally useful and very relevant to moving on from an unforgiving past. We are changing thresholds.

The terms threshold is very simple to understand. Threshold means at some predetermined state ( a value or position ) something happens or doesn’t happen. It’s easy to understand this in terms of the heating system in your home. Usually some temperature is set, say 14 degrees, where the heating comes on if the temperature is below the set point, here 14 degrees and switches off above 14 degrees. So in this instance sustaining a certain temperature.

NLP Newcastle Practice Group

Another example, staying with temperature, is when water temperature reaches 0 degrees ice begins to form. 100 degrees and water evaporates. These are state changes caused by temperature, cold and hot.

Thresholding processes are found in NLP specifically in this instance the two that are ‘designed’ to either make something so pleasurable  or horrible that through association it ‘blows out’ its appeal or revulsion. Another one makes something so awful that it becomes awful for ever. Neurologically these two approaches are working with the pleasure ( to burn out ) and pain ( to burn in ) neural circuitry.

Open-ended and general we will use hypnotherapy to guide our clients in resetting thresholds to re-experience thoughts, feelings and actions then using the power of ‘maybe’ form a more honest integration as a middle, more balanced path, which can help heal and ease the past or modulate and centre our futures.

Hypnotic Parts Integration : Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Group 3rd December 2014

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

Parts work in hypnotherapy is a well know and highly effective way to reframe, resolve and enable a wide variety of behaviours.

A common applications of parts work include resolving problem behaviours, creating and accessing new behaviours and changing thinking patterns to more enabling thinking patterns. All of these in some way can be thought of as both re-framing, re-meaning and integration.

Integration can mean amalgamation, incorporation, unification, merger, fusing, or blending. This may not be what we really require! Perhaps we actually mean sublimation.

When seemingly competing parts are ‘integrated’ into a larger system there can be a diffusion and effective disappearance of those parts into a new whole. But what about the inherent value in both of those parts? Is there a potentially more holistic and system valuable way to do parts work?

When both aspects of competing parts are sublimated and included into a whole, they retain their individual properties and learn to work either together or apart from each other as situations dictate.

The process offered at the December cafe is a physicality hypnotic parts sublimation. This is a very neat process I learned from Steve Gilligan some years ago and will be appropriate for a wide variety of problem behaviours, problem thinking, worry and as well improving behaviours.
