Vaccine for Unhappiness? Newcastle NLP & Hypnotherapy Practice Group : November 2016

Trancecafe No Comments »

Happiness, Satisfaction, Contentment are a group of words, concepts, that we are regularly asked to evaluate on a day to day basis. Not necessarily specifically asked; Non the less asked either by ourselves in some way in those moments of introspection or unconsciously asked by all the media we expose ourselves to. Question posed is are you Happy/Unhappy?

There is a massive psychological body of evidence that suggests we can be primed ( think mesmerism, television or a casual question like are you unhappy? ) to act and behave in a certain way that is semi-predisposed in our response. We will mostly think this is our own internally, even consciously generated responses. Mostly I think we are not entirely correct with that assumption. OK, so why not?

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle

Who Influences Your Thoughts?

This is simple. Because we are constantly interacting with the living environment or interacting with our memories and perceptions of our experience. So succinctly we are products of our experience and we are unconsciously influenced within our experience and thoughts so please do not disregard outside influences.

The idea of this Trance Cafe is to firstly explore some of the extents of how outside influences can shape our experience and thoughts. Secondly we will explore what happiness ( or the lack of ) is.

Using ideas from Imagine – Johah Leherer and Daniel kahneman’s excellent book, Thinking Fast and Thinking Slow and his TED talk Memory vs Experience we will form and shape ideas about what happiness is and how we can make a more informed assessment of ‘am I happy?’

Making & Creating Meanings : Newcastle NLP & Hypnotherapy Practice Group : September 2016

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

Making and creating meaning in and from our experiences can and does dramatically affect our life. Our judgement and it is that, can be the difference between how we perceive our world, as in a problem, opportunity or some other perspective way.

It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that mattersEpictetus

Our perspectives are just that, perspectives. As we can learn to perceive different and as such conjure multiple meanings in different ways, we can open the doors to a better and more personally, more humanistically way of being when it lines up with our true values …

It might be more than nice to be a little freer from the unconscious to conscious meanings we all can at times ‘make’ from our dances with life, when those meanings cause suffering, anxiety and pain, mightn’t it? It might …

NLP Newcastle Practice Group : Meanings and Value

The exploration of this Septembers Trance Cafe is to both explore how we make meanings from our experiences and also to share some ideas as to how we can create a more enabling and empowering meaning from our experiences.

Forgetting and Remembering on Event Horizons : Newcastle NLP Practice Group : 1st June

Trancecafe No Comments »

Have you ever had the experience of walking through a doorway, into a room and then pausing and having literally no idea why you are in this room? Of course you have! This has happened to me many times. It brings a certain facial expression of lowered eyebrows and a vacant gaze as I realise I don’t really know what I am doing there.

This of course is a common experience and has been studied in depth by Radvansky. In his paper ‘Across the Event Horizon’ there is a discussion about what happens in terms of forgetting and remembering as we cross a threshold or ‘Event Horizons’ which are basically doorways.

Event Horizon NLP Newcastle

This will be coupled with other interesting research by Weick regarding how people suffering from anxiety can have a tendency to walk off to one side ( as a result of one over active hemisphere ) as well as ideas from Bagua Zhang.

The idea of this months practice group is to turn this into a hypnotic process to both let go of certain thoughts or behaviours ( perhaps anxieties ) and reinforce other qualities such as compassion or openness.

And remember this June is the last Trance Cafe until August later in the year. Hope to see you there in creating a new process.

Psychological Parts Work : Newcastle Hypnotherapy Practice Group : 4th May

Trancecafe No Comments »

Enjoying the recent bank holiday there has been some wildly mixed weather. Clouds, rain, sun and wind in great abundance. It’s been warm, cold and almost tepid; All indication that a mixed bag of UK spring is living up to expectations. Lawns, bushes and flowers create a patchwork of colours and I can think about all of this.

By categorising and labelling my experiences I go about the task of filtering and segmenting my direct experience and practically all of this is automatic and habitual. Somewhere in my brain there is the assemblage of colour, shapes and feelings that are integrated without conscious process and offer, to me, my experience of the moment.

The idea of ‘parts’ or our symphony of experiences ( thoughts, feelings, movements and emotions ) can be very useful in terms of change work. Parts serve purposes or a purpose that was necessary earlier in life and has become a habit.

Newcastle NLP

We can use the ‘idea’ of parts to help transform behaviours that would seem to no longer serve us well in certain contexts. And we can use parts to enhance or improve behaviours in other areas of life. Psychological parts is a very open possibility type of hypnotic process. Some ways to work with ‘parts’ will follow and the idea for the evening is to explore some of these.

  • Parts for behaviour and their intentions
  • Chakras as ways of symbolising intentional change
  • NeuroAnatomy such as hypothalamus
  • Jungian archtypes as aspects of our unconscious
  • Multiple perspectival positions

Nurturing Kindfulness : Newcastle NLP Practice Group : April 6th

NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

Being kind to ourself and to others may be one of the most useful human experiences that helps us both recognise our shared human nature ( Kind ) and help us connect our actions to supporting and being there for our fellows with our natural propensity to do good ( Kind ).

This practice group will explore what kindfullness ( the state of being kind ) means individually and why its a good thing to have access to the right kind of kindfullness much more of the time.

So the idea for the evening is to have an exploration into how we do represent the timeless and eternal in our own inner world with the purpose of linking this for ourselves to our kindfulness state. Now we are going to require some personal experiences of being kind and receiving kindness from others to map those particular submodalities.

Having some representations of kindness, an anchor to our representation of  timelessness we will explore how our attention is either drawn or captured ( there seems to me three modes of this ) as a representation and ecologically engage all three structures as a kind of yin and yang multiplicity.

Time permitting we may also explore how the five poisons can prevent kindfull actions and look to solutions as appropriate.

NLP Practice Group Newcastle : Wednesday 2nd March 2016

Trancecafe No Comments »

The NLP & Hypnotherapy Practice group topics this March will be decided and shaped on the night!

There will be some exploration of how we can construct and deconstruct the useful and sometimes unhelpful aspects of our ‘identity’ that we occasionally convince ourself that are true. Utilising some aspects of ‘priming’ from Kahneman & Tversky’ work we will explore how certain statements and their seemingly innocent order can have a stunning effect.

We will then integrate this into what is selected and shaped on the evening with the intention of creating new paths and ways of thinking.

The First Step In Avoiding A Trap … NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Group : 3rd February 2016

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

Its the first Trance Cafe of 2016 and so wishing you a belated happy New Year with lots of wonderful experiences to come.

For the February practice evening I want to explore some behavioural patterns that we have learned and seem to likely play out unconsciously. Sometimes, most times, our unconscious behaviour serves us really well, occasionally it doesn’t.

If our thoughts and behaviours are largely unconscious, how can we review and update what we perceive as problematic ‘responses’ in a certain context? This will include some explorations of ‘patterns’, how we can incorporate new learnings and ‘utilising’ these patterns to incorporate useful differences in new ways.

Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Group

All this will naturally include practising aspects of hypnosis, inductions and change process with a sprinkling of neurology and psychology. Perhaps!

Time to Appreciate Time Lines as Future Resources – 6th May : Newcastle NLP Practice Group

Trancecafe No Comments »

Just about everyone I know sometimes thinks about the future and what kind of a future they would really want to have. I am specifically making reference to a future where there is a majority or at least a bias towards good times, good experiences and possibly even more, the belief, an anticipation where such a future is available and not solely dependent on the past or even present circumstance.

We have all to a relative extent experienced challenging times, possibly times when we have despaired, thought we would fail or even worse. Yet here we are, bruised, maybe a bit battered, worse for where and yet here we are. Going forward in some way.

Newcastle NLP Practice Group

This May Trance Cafe, Hypnotherapy Newcastle NLP Practice Group will use Time Lines from our past to seed and resource our futures to better help and access our strengths in the troubled times as well as the good.

An old favourite, very short story, I like is about planting trees.

On old woman was planting tree seeds when someone came up to her and asked. “Why are you planting those tree seeds when you will never live to see them grow to more than saplings at best?” The old woman without words, smiling, replied with a glance, gesturing towards her children and her children’s children.”

This Trance / NLP Cafe is making use of both your past and a solution ( not problem focused ) but solution focused orientation to the future.

Exploiting Strengths Shamelessly in Change Work : April 1st 2015

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

When I am working with clients, who are usually coming to see me for problem resolution, one aspect of the work I do is discovering where and in what contexts my clients have real competencies and where, even in the smallest instance, they are doing good.

It’s not always that easy for people who are feeling seemingly insurmountable problems to notice or realise parts of their life where they are competent and doing good because their focus is their problems. A tight focus can have a tendency to obscure and minimise everything else that is available in terms of feelings, thoughts, past and current experience.

One of my friends and mentors Harold often jokes that when his father was in the process of ‘finding him a job’ in his late teens, early 20’s, his father got him that job working in a psychiatric hospital. His father saying ‘the best way to hide a tree is to put it in a forest.’

One of the many talents Harold has which contribute to making him an exceptionally effective therapist is to be unconventional in some of his approaches when he works with his clients. Harold pretty much always sees the good in people and with precision will utilise this, even the smallest, competency as a basis for change and helping his clients realise by themselves, they can and they do have the capacity to make beneficial changes.

This Trance Cafe will be exploring how when people are stuck or recycling the content and meaning of their problems, their experience and perceptions are often confined within quite a tight frame or container and with emphasis, what methods are available to reconnect our clients to their competencies.

Working as a therapist or coach one of our jobs is to ‘out frame’ a problem context and discover or more correctly uncover those processes within a much larger frame that is in some sense a strategy, ready to offer new content within the same or highly parallel frame.

Or having discovered competencies and skills explore ways to map these processes as resources to become consciously available and active in perceived problem situations. This can be accurately described as partitioning and then integration.

A Trance to Remember : Taking Charge of Your Outcomes

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe, Workshop No Comments »

Beliefs have the power to shape reality, or much more accurately, our perceptions of reality. Let us take for an example someone who is worried or rather anxious. These worries or anxieties  could come from a variety of sources; these may be physical and psychological and/or environmental.

This from me begs  the question what were the conditions, specifically the initial conditions that were at least in part, responsible for all or at least in some part, that particular perception of reality.

Newcastle NLP Hypnotherapy Practice Group

The idea of sensitive dependence on initial conditions is from a branch of science and maths called Chaos theory. Chaos theory is somewhere in between large body physics such as planets movements and the infinitesimal quantum theory which deals with bodies and interactions that are so small as to be almost incomprehensible. It deals very much with interactions on our human perspectives.

Returning to the anxious worrier or even the passive dreamer there are a series of either fortunate or unfortunate events that would seem to have created a proclivity to think and in some senses act in a certain way that can in the case of the anxious worrier and fuel the fires of worry or in the case of the passive dreamer  add water to the flames of any deep realisation; based on and within what previously happened.

By being aware that initial conditions( which we will define) can and do  have a real influence on what can happen  wouldn’t it be useful, wise or even different to have a way of resetting those initial conditions that have the potential to set everything else in motion either for good or for bad.

This March Trance Cafe will explore a methodology to counteract negative beliefs or injunctions very indirectly and then proceed in our processed based way to set the initial conditions, to stack the deck in favour of more positive expectations in a way that is supportive of outcomes and can be easily done-with some effort-by individuals.
