Exploiting Strengths Shamelessly in Change Work : April 1st 2015

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

When I am working with clients, who are usually coming to see me for problem resolution, one aspect of the work I do is discovering where and in what contexts my clients have real competencies and where, even in the smallest instance, they are doing good.

It’s not always that easy for people who are feeling seemingly insurmountable problems to notice or realise parts of their life where they are competent and doing good because their focus is their problems. A tight focus can have a tendency to obscure and minimise everything else that is available in terms of feelings, thoughts, past and current experience.

One of my friends and mentors Harold often jokes that when his father was in the process of ‘finding him a job’ in his late teens, early 20’s, his father got him that job working in a psychiatric hospital. His father saying ‘the best way to hide a tree is to put it in a forest.’

One of the many talents Harold has which contribute to making him an exceptionally effective therapist is to be unconventional in some of his approaches when he works with his clients. Harold pretty much always sees the good in people and with precision will utilise this, even the smallest, competency as a basis for change and helping his clients realise by themselves, they can and they do have the capacity to make beneficial changes.

This Trance Cafe will be exploring how when people are stuck or recycling the content and meaning of their problems, their experience and perceptions are often confined within quite a tight frame or container and with emphasis, what methods are available to reconnect our clients to their competencies.

Working as a therapist or coach one of our jobs is to ‘out frame’ a problem context and discover or more correctly uncover those processes within a much larger frame that is in some sense a strategy, ready to offer new content within the same or highly parallel frame.

Or having discovered competencies and skills explore ways to map these processes as resources to become consciously available and active in perceived problem situations. This can be accurately described as partitioning and then integration.

A Trance to Remember : Taking Charge of Your Outcomes

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe, Workshop No Comments »

Beliefs have the power to shape reality, or much more accurately, our perceptions of reality. Let us take for an example someone who is worried or rather anxious. These worries or anxieties  could come from a variety of sources; these may be physical and psychological and/or environmental.

This from me begs  the question what were the conditions, specifically the initial conditions that were at least in part, responsible for all or at least in some part, that particular perception of reality.

Newcastle NLP Hypnotherapy Practice Group

The idea of sensitive dependence on initial conditions is from a branch of science and maths called Chaos theory. Chaos theory is somewhere in between large body physics such as planets movements and the infinitesimal quantum theory which deals with bodies and interactions that are so small as to be almost incomprehensible. It deals very much with interactions on our human perspectives.

Returning to the anxious worrier or even the passive dreamer there are a series of either fortunate or unfortunate events that would seem to have created a proclivity to think and in some senses act in a certain way that can in the case of the anxious worrier and fuel the fires of worry or in the case of the passive dreamer  add water to the flames of any deep realisation; based on and within what previously happened.

By being aware that initial conditions( which we will define) can and do  have a real influence on what can happen  wouldn’t it be useful, wise or even different to have a way of resetting those initial conditions that have the potential to set everything else in motion either for good or for bad.

This March Trance Cafe will explore a methodology to counteract negative beliefs or injunctions very indirectly and then proceed in our processed based way to set the initial conditions, to stack the deck in favour of more positive expectations in a way that is supportive of outcomes and can be easily done-with some effort-by individuals.

Thresholding Your Futures : Newcastle Hypnotherapy and NLP Practice Group : 4th February

Hypnotherapy Practice Group, Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle No Comments »

In this process I am borrowing on the Buddhist and Taoist idea of a middle road and this means balance. Balance in our thoughts and feelings and with our actions. This process can be very useful when planning a honest and realistic outcome or when facing challenging or difficult times such as when in the process of stopping some problem behaviour. Equally useful and very relevant to moving on from an unforgiving past. We are changing thresholds.

The terms threshold is very simple to understand. Threshold means at some predetermined state ( a value or position ) something happens or doesn’t happen. It’s easy to understand this in terms of the heating system in your home. Usually some temperature is set, say 14 degrees, where the heating comes on if the temperature is below the set point, here 14 degrees and switches off above 14 degrees. So in this instance sustaining a certain temperature.

NLP Newcastle Practice Group

Another example, staying with temperature, is when water temperature reaches 0 degrees ice begins to form. 100 degrees and water evaporates. These are state changes caused by temperature, cold and hot.

Thresholding processes are found in NLP specifically in this instance the two that are ‘designed’ to either make something so pleasurable  or horrible that through association it ‘blows out’ its appeal or revulsion. Another one makes something so awful that it becomes awful for ever. Neurologically these two approaches are working with the pleasure ( to burn out ) and pain ( to burn in ) neural circuitry.

Open-ended and general we will use hypnotherapy to guide our clients in resetting thresholds to re-experience thoughts, feelings and actions then using the power of ‘maybe’ form a more honest integration as a middle, more balanced path, which can help heal and ease the past or modulate and centre our futures.

Hypnotic Parts Integration : Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Group 3rd December 2014

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

Parts work in hypnotherapy is a well know and highly effective way to reframe, resolve and enable a wide variety of behaviours.

A common applications of parts work include resolving problem behaviours, creating and accessing new behaviours and changing thinking patterns to more enabling thinking patterns. All of these in some way can be thought of as both re-framing, re-meaning and integration.

Integration can mean amalgamation, incorporation, unification, merger, fusing, or blending. This may not be what we really require! Perhaps we actually mean sublimation.

When seemingly competing parts are ‘integrated’ into a larger system there can be a diffusion and effective disappearance of those parts into a new whole. But what about the inherent value in both of those parts? Is there a potentially more holistic and system valuable way to do parts work?

When both aspects of competing parts are sublimated and included into a whole, they retain their individual properties and learn to work either together or apart from each other as situations dictate.

The process offered at the December cafe is a physicality hypnotic parts sublimation. This is a very neat process I learned from Steve Gilligan some years ago and will be appropriate for a wide variety of problem behaviours, problem thinking, worry and as well improving behaviours.

Clean Space : Metaphors to Change – Newcastle Hypnotherapy and NLP Practice Group July 2nd

This July at the Trance Cafe, Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy practice group is going to be super! My good friend and colleague Holly Kobayashi will be facilitating an evenings exploration in Clean Space.

As always at the Trance Cafe this will be a practical evening where you will get real experience and take home the process for personal and professional use with your clients.

NLP Practice Group in Newcastle upon Tyne

Clean Space is the late David Grove’s work which follows on from Clean Language. This is an exceptionally useful process, something I have really benefited from on several occasions. The idea and the process is deceptively simple and often can provide the crucial experience ( and it is an experience ) to shape beneficial change.

Holly is an exceptional agent of change. In her work she is consistently helping people to move out of what may seem like really intractable problems with her application in her therapeutic clinical work. What is particularly relevant here is you will get the latest developments and insights from Holly who is right at the front line of working with very challenging cases.

You can find out more about Yogini Holly, her therapies and Yoga classes at her web page The Mind Spa.

Changing Habits and Updating Identity : Newcastle NLP & Hypnotherapy Practice Group April 2nd

Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, Trancecafe No Comments »

Most if not all of us have habits we would like to change. This can be something we do and no longer want to do or it can be something we don’t do and really wish we did. It can also be increasing or decreasing the frequency of a habit.

Part of this often tricky equation is our history. Our identity or who we think we are is pretty much founded in our history. And our history is a collection of our memories and experiences. Some of this is stored in procedural or muscle memory and some in our autobiographical memory.

Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Group

When we remember the past we are in essence re-creating our memories. And this has massive amounts to do with our intentions and our ability to imagine. This April the topics of exploration and change are using the NLP Change Personal History pattern and Creating a Compelling Future. We will also use aspects of trance phenomenon to see how easily we can forget our name and use this change our past habits, pre-conceptions and just for fun.

Hypnotic Pacing and Leading : Newcastle Hypnotherapy Practice Group March 5th

Hypnotherapy Practice Group, Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

The concept of pacing and leading is familiar in the world of NLP and Hypnosis and can take a wide variety of forms. This can be physical rapport, the use of certain predicates in language and where we are going this March is using language to pace and lead the hypnotic experience.

We are beginning with using the well known application of linguistic presuppositions to connect and verify experience in our hypnotees and going on to develop and utilise hypnotic responses in an open feedback loop.

Once we have had a practice with a basic structure, one that the script based hypnotist seldom masters, we will move forward to incorporating the kinds of questions that are designed to request an internal subjective exploration with the purpose of creating the dynamic where trance phenomena are undoubtedly experienced. This will be of the nature of arm catalepsy and levitation, ideo motoric responses and utilisation.

This exploration of this Trance Cafe and NLP Cafe is to both learn how do deeper connect with the feedback loop that we and a practice partner will create with specific emphasis on the development, verification and deepening of hypnotic trance phenomena.

Internal Conflict Parts & Peace – Newcastle NLP Practice Group : February 5th

Hypnotherapy Practice Group, Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, Trancecafe No Comments »

The vast majority of personal problems and issues is about internal conflict of primary emotion and conflicting thought. An exploration and honest peace plan that comes from the inside out.

The concept of parts is well known in the field of psychotherapy. The simple idea being we as people are composed of psychological parts or components of our identity of self concept. Parts are holons. A holon is a term created by Arthur Koestler to describe the inter connectives or inter related aspects of systems.

For example an atom is made up of sub atomic particles such as electrons, neutrons and protons, which are themselves composed of smaller particles. A molecule is made up of atoms. Cells are composed of molecules and so on; each entity is a holon or a simultaneous whole part.

Holons are a convenient way to describe the concept of psychological parts. In part because any aspect of the psyche is described by a lable or perceptual frame. The label or frame simultaneously highlights and hides certain aspects of the whole, these may be narratives, frames or schemas in thought or in experience. For example Hero may highlight heroic actions and strength of character, coming through certain events and tests. Hero simultaneously co-defines villain or anti-hero and what can be hidden or even mutually exclusive are cultural beliefs, the need for a hero and the immutable tides of transformational change.

This is where the concept of psychological parts is accented. In terms of personal transition from embedded and intractable problems we begin to see a chance of freedom from tyranny and the evolution of self. What is an essential tension prior to any kind of freedom of choice is a transitional period of seemingly mutually exclusive thought forms or beliefs and values.

When we realise we need change and positive change at that there is a certain kind of realisation that amounts to both a death and rebirth of who we are. We are no longer trapped by thoughts, beliefs and feelings because we have both a cognitive and experiential experience that any dis empowering ideas, thoughts and actions are in essence no us. This is the process of dis identifying or objectifying  what is no more our essence but what we can recognise as aspects of our consciousness in awareness.

The exploration of this Trance Cafe and NLP Cafe is to both recognise and see the hidden aspects of seemingly problematic ways of thinking and being so we have as a human being a very important distinction between Self and Object ( or Subject ). This is a very real or at least possible path to knowing our birthright and who we may be. This is a pathway to peace with powerful inspiration to create and connect.

Sleight of Mouth – NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle – December 4th

Hypnotherapy Practice Group, Hypnotherapy Practice Group Newcastle, NLP Practice Group, NLP Practice Group Newcastle, Trancecafe No Comments »

Sleigh of Mouth is one of a series of ‘linguistic’ reframing patterns well know in the field of NLP. The origins go back to Robert Dilts coding some of the reframing patterns used by Richard Bandler to help people change how they think and perceive. This month we will be exploring the Sleight of Mouth patterns and making sure we practice their application.

If you have completed an NLP Practitioner Newcastle or Master Practitioner training you will have already explored the concept of Model of The World ( MOW ). This to some great extent would be equivalent to our current beliefs, values and very much expectations created by our beliefs and values.

Sometimes our MOW or current perceptions can cause problems, lead to and re-enforce unhelping and stuck beliefs. Sleigh of Mouth offers ways you may be able to free up and extend beliefs for yourself and for others such as friends, family and clients.

NLP Practice Group North East

The Hungarian mathematician George Polya offered some six ways that ‘beliefs’ or Patterns of Plausible Inference could be formed. Many of the NLP greats have referred to Polya’s work for analogies and intervention patterns including Christina Hall, Doug O Brian and Trevor Silvester. Here is some excellent and free material on Polya patterns and their use from Trevor Silvester.

What we know as our beliefs may or may not have a basis in our direct experience, they may be here say or popular conviction. But no matter how our beliefs were formed they can both help us towards freedom or equally imprisonment. Sleigh of Mouth is one way of softening, loosening or changing beliefs.
