Forgetting and Remembering on Event Horizons : Newcastle NLP Practice Group : 1st June

Trancecafe No Comments »

Have you ever had the experience of walking through a doorway, into a room and then pausing and having literally no idea why you are in this room? Of course you have! This has happened to me many times. It brings a certain facial expression of lowered eyebrows and a vacant gaze as I realise I don’t really know what I am doing there.

This of course is a common experience and has been studied in depth by Radvansky. In his paper ‘Across the Event Horizon’ there is a discussion about what happens in terms of forgetting and remembering as we cross a threshold or ‘Event Horizons’ which are basically doorways.

This will be coupled with other interesting research by Weick regarding how people suffering from anxiety can have a tendency to walk off to one side ( as a result of one over active hemisphere ) as well as ideas from Bagua Zhang.

The idea of this months practice group is to turn this into a hypnotic process to both let go of certain thoughts or behaviours ( perhaps anxieties ) and reinforce other qualities such as compassion or openness.

And remember this June is the last Trance Cafe until August later in the year. Hope to see you there in creating a new process.

Psychological Parts Work : Newcastle Hypnotherapy Practice Group : 4th May

Enjoying the recent bank holiday there has been some wildly mixed weather. Clouds, rain, sun and wind in great abundance. It’s been warm, cold and almost tepid; All indication that a mixed bag of UK spring is living up to expectations. Lawns, bushes and flowers create a patchwork of colours and I can think about all of this.

By categorising and labelling my experiences I go about the task of filtering and segmenting my direct experience and practically all of this is automatic and habitual. Somewhere in my brain there is the assemblage of colour, shapes and feelings that are integrated without conscious process and offer, to me, my experience of the moment.

The idea of ‘parts’ or our symphony of experiences ( thoughts, feelings, movements and emotions ) can be very useful in terms of change work. Parts serve purposes or a purpose that was necessary earlier in life and has become a habit.

Newcastle NLP

We can use the ‘idea’ of parts to help transform behaviours that would seem to no longer serve us well in certain contexts. And we can use parts to enhance or improve behaviours in other areas of life. Psychological parts is a very open possibility type of hypnotic process. Some ways to work with ‘parts’ will follow and the idea for the evening is to explore some of these.

  • Parts for behaviour and their intentions
  • Chakras as ways of symbolising intentional change
  • NeuroAnatomy such as hypothalamus
  • Jungian archtypes as aspects of our unconscious
  • Multiple perspectival positions
